Return of the (Round) Robin!

It is finally finished!! (And I finally got the pic to post with the correct orientation.....grrr....) I added the square to the right of the center, with the cabin from LHN's "Prairie Sampler," the swan in a pond from a Prairie Schooler design, trees from some freebies in my files, and the squirrel from another magazine design I found somewhere. I just love the whole thing!! I was going to frame it, but it recently hit me that it would make a lovely quilted wallhanging, especially if it was the center of a giant "log cabin" pieced square...but I can't sew (at least, not well enough to take on that project with this one-of-a-kind piece). So maybe I'll stop in at the local quilt shop and see if there is anyone there who would like to take this on??

We're getting ready for Thanksgiving here, so things are rather busy. My mother-in-law and her husband are coming from Iowa, and will actually be staying with MY mother (my dad is hunting in Canada - Mom has made him swear this is his last trip), so we're going there for dinner and the weekend.

On the stitching front, I've been working on Labyrinth again. I joined the "WIP Killers" thread over at The Wagon BB, so hopefully that will keep me motivated! And I also finished up a piece for the "non-ornament Christmas smalls" exchange over at HOE. It isn't mailed yet, so I can't share.

On the way home!

I'm sorry it has been so long since I updated. Some strange medical happenings here, I've been put in a bit of a holding pattern... *sigh* Anyway, last week I did finish Judith's RR, and it is now on it's way home to the Netherlands! Here is a close-up of my 2 little squares - January and April by Maryse. The pattern had Easter eggs at the bottom of the April square, but I couldn't resist changing those to little bunnies (from one of LHN's ornament designs in a JCS issue). The eggs blended in to the fabric color a bit too much for me....and I like bunnies better, anyway! So this is the end of my Neighborhood RR commitment - yay, I made it through! I had a lot of fun stitching on everyone's projects, and I hope everyone is pleased with my contributions to their pieces.

Well, dinner is in the crockpot and there's a load of laundry in the washer, so I'm going to head downstairs, watch a movie with DH and relax and stitch a bit. Enjoy your Sunday!

Y.A.W.N.

Ugh, I've been sooooooo tired lately....not sure why. But the stitching has definitely been suffering! Not to worry, though, I've gotten a bit done. First, for Judith:
This is the second square I'm doing for Judith -- I posted the first (finished) a month or so ago. Judith's fabric is lovely! I hope the colors in this square show up okay, though. The April square has a lot of khaki/green in it that blends with the fabric. Judith, I should have this finished up by the end of January.

And my little Fairy Tale Towne.
Progress, slowly but surely!

Vacation progress

Well, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! We spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with my folks and my younger sister. It was lovely. My French toast breakfast casserole was delish, and the framed needlework made Mom cry. Dad enjoyed his cans of figs (hey, Mom said to get those for him!), and Sis and I had agreed not to exchange this year. Mom and Dad gave all of us kids a very generous cash gift, plus a few small things. And heck, I really NEEDED the new sports bra Mom got for me! LOL

Stitching-wise, I'm still working along on Judith's RR. I finished my first square (January), and I've started on the second (April). Also, I gave myself a "Christmas present" start...I've been looking forward to stitching Little House Needlework's "Moon and Stars" pattern ever since I picked it up a few months ago at the LNS. And wouldn't you know, the pattern and supplies fit perfectly in the pretty zippered bag Mom sent me for my birthday! hehehe So it was a lovely travel project. Here is my progress, just from Christmas Eve/Day and a bit over the weekend.I picked up 2 of the Crescent Colors called for - the green and the brown shades - and am substituting from my stash for the rest. I can't remember them all off-hand, but I know the blue is "Bluebells" by The Dye is Cast. So pretty!

Stitchy fingers and clicky fingers

I've been working along on Judith's RR - here is my latest progress on my first square. Judith provided the charts, a set of monthly freebies from a French site, and I chose January for mine.

judithsrr1218

And, while I try not to show off TOO much stash here, I came upon some great finds recently that I just have to share. DH and I have agreed not to exchange big gifts this Christmas, and instead have given each other "permission" to spend a little fun money on ourselves. In fact, my entire family is handling the holidays this way this year, and it is so wonderful! For the first time in a long time, I'm really looking forward to just hanging out at Mom & Dad's, with no concerns about how many or what sort of gifts I got for everyone. We're bringing a new board game, my little sister is bringing a bottle of wine, I'm going to make a yummy breakfast casserole Christmas morning as my gift.....ah, peace and joy. Really. (I'm sure that will change if/when there are ever little people in the family again, but for now with just us "grown-ups," it feels perfect.)

Anyway. My finds....

stash1218

(And I got all of this on eBay for around $25 -- including shipping. Squeee!)
- 2 Workbasket patterns -- "Trellis" and "God's Critters."
- Glory Bee's "BYOB - Witches' Ball" pattern. Will go nicely with my earlier finish of "Bugs & Hisses".
- from Lizzie Kate -- "Welcome Baby" and "Hocus Pocus" snippets, and the October flip-it. I wanted the "Welcome Baby" to possibly use as a quick baby gift, the others were just included in the lot...
- a fat quarter of Silkweaver "Debutante" 32-ct. Jazlyn. I was thinking of using this for Fairy Tale Towne, but it is more purple than I thought it was from the picture. *sigh* Oh well, it is still pretty, and I'm sure I'll find a use for it!
**all pics courtesy of Flickr tonight....everytime I loaded them using Blogger, they were rotated. So annoying.

Little House(s) in the Big Woods

My RR made it home! And tonight I finished up my own square(the center one), so now I can share...

Isn't it absolutely adorable?!?!? I love it. Thank you to Annemarie, Katrina, Kathy, Carol, Cathy B., Judith, and Michelle for all of your hard work and beautiful stitching! As for what to do with the remaining square.....well, my dear blog reader/friends, this is where I have to ask. Have you always dreamed of living in a cozy cabin nestled amongst the trees, but just can't do it in real life yet? Well, here is your chance to do it in thread! All I ask is that you be someone I've "known" online for at least a little while, and that you are willing and able to stitch on evenweave (I believe this is a 32-ct). You also have to supply/"build" your own pattern. I totally understand that the holiday season may not be the best time to ask anyone to commit to such a project and a timeframe, so I'm more than willing to wait until January to mail this to you.

(If no one is interested, I do have a few ideas of my own....I just thought it would be fun to have 9 different stitchers work on this.)

Wine & Cheese, Please!

Tonight I finished up Cathy's round robin square. For her neighborhood, she asked that we stitch something reminiscent of where we live. I had one square planned out back when all the group members announced their themes, but then we moved.... But I was able to come up with something that actually encorporates something found in both areas I've lived in over the past year - grapes!! Yes, both northwestern Pennsylvania (where I was before) and the Finger Lakes of New York (where I am now) are grape-growing regions. So here is Prairie Schooler's "Fox and Grapes, with a stone path added by me and a wall with wildflowers from an Eventide Designs pattern. The wall reminds me of my parents' driveway, where my father put in a stone wall and planted wildflowers all along it - they are beautiful in the summer!

(I added "state" to my location, only because so many times people think you are from the City when you say you live in New York.....)

New blog, same projects

As you may have noticed, I decided it was time to update the look of my blog last week...this template makes me very happy (for the time-being, anyway!). I hope it is displaying correctly for everyone else. Also, I lost my "blogs I read" list, and am doing my best to recreate it -- bear with me if you've "disappeared."

In honor of the new magical look around here, I worked on the mermaids this weekend. They really ARE coming along....I added some more beads to the lower tail bit, plus more blue-green fins.

And here is Cathy's RR. I'm hoping to get this finished up next weekend, as it needs to go in the mail by the 15th of November.
Just a bit of grape vine and the house to finish (plus my location, of course)! I think I might add a skinny tree on the left, and maybe a stone path in front of the house....

A sad but busy weekend

I had the house to myself this weekend....in fact I still do, for a few more hours...because DH's grandfather passed away unexpectedly last week. It really was rather mysterious, as he only went to see his doctor for some stomach pains about a week and a half ago...from there he had some scans done, was diagnosed with some kind of "atypical" gastric cancer, and died within a few days. As far as I know, the family still hasn't gotten much of an explanation. Anyway, the funeral was today, and DH left in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Sadly, I could not go with him -- I don't have quite enough vacation time accumulated yet at my new job. So I stayed home, built a shoe rack for the entryway, watched movies I've seen a zillion times (Harry Potter! Pirates!), and stitched.

Here's my progress on Cathy's neighborhood (again from Flickr, Blogger wants to rotate this one, too. Grrrr):
cathysrr1012

And here's my new Halloween-y start, Plum Street Samplers' "Bugs & Hisses."

I really think this is just the cutest little piece. I didn't have all the colors the pattern called for, so I improvised a bit -- I think my pumpkins might be a bit brighter than the model picture. But I still like it! There is a border that is supposed to stitched in GAST Dark Chocolate, but I don't have any of that, either. I used WDW Onyx for the cats, which were also supposed to be done in Dark Chocolate...I don't think I have enough of that for the whole border, though. Hmmm. I suppose I could go with the DMC substitute...3371.....eh. We'll see!

Yesterday my mom came out to visit, and we went out to lunch and shopping together. It was a fun couple hours...plus, Mom paid for some non-standard groceries for me, since she loves shopping at Wegman's (a regional grocery store here, for my non-local readers)!

Pics!

First, the finished Reading Sampler. I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think it is adorable! In fact, I'm thinking of sending it to Jill Rensel for framing, along with a pic of me reading as a child that I know Mom loves. Maybe she could do a neat hand-painted matting job for me...

(click to see it larger in my Flickr account....Blogger kept misbehaving and insisting that this pic should display vertically....)

And here is the latest on Cathy's neighborhood....some more vines, and a little blackbird sitting on a chimney!

Last Round!

Tonight while DH and I watched "Iron Man," I started on Cathy B's Neighborhood RR. Cathy asked us all to stitch something reminiscent of our hometown/region. Since I moved halfway through the RR, I was left with a bit of a dilemma....until I realized that both areas I lived in over the past few months are in wine country (the northwest corner of PA, and now the Finger Lakes region of New York State). So, after scouring needlework shops and eBay, I happened upon Prairie Schooler's "Fox and Grapes." I think it is perfect! Here is my start....I'm also still toying with my Fairy Tale Towne layout for the Me Myself and I RR. I picked up 2 of the Elizabeth's Designs cottage series very cheaply on eBay (of course), and am tossing around a couple different ideas. I need to transfer all my dwellings to graph paper that is the same scale so I can try to get everything arranged in an appropriate perspective. Hmmm.

Another RR square done

Here is Carol's square, all finished!! The house and tree are from Diane Williams' (Little House Needleworks) "Grateful Hearts" sampler, which appeared in the November 2000 issue of For the Love of Cross Stitch. The garden at the bottom is a modified version of one of the borders in the sampler, and the squirrel came from another pattern in the same magazine. I was originally going to use some little critter from one of LHN's Christmas ornie designs, but gave that up when I realized I'd have to go digging for my JCS issues... LOL I also thought about putting something else on the left between the garden and the tree, but I can't find anything that fits and looks right. Carol said she likes it the way it is, so I won't worry!!

I hope everyone here in the US has a lovely Labor Day weekend! We're hoping to visit my parents today, then I might spend some time working on Butterfly Lace. Oh, and I'll update that movie meme at some point, too, just in case you're curious!

Carol's RR

In between unpacking and watching the Olympics, I've been working on Carol's neighborhood... My contribution is a design by Diane Williams (of Little House Needleworks) that appeared in an old magazine issue. It isn't quite tall enough for Carol's 60x60 square, so I'm going to add a little flower garden in front of the house. I hope you like it, Carol!!

Exchanges and RRs, oh my

Monday I received my package from the Fantasy Exchange - woo-hoo! Eileen sent me a lovely biscornu, an ornament kit, and 2 of the prettiest hand-dyed flosses. The pattern she used for the biscornu is Ia! Ia! by One Star's Light. I guess it is supposed to be Cthulu...but I'm not a Lovecraft reader/fan, so I'm a little unfamiliar there. This geeky librarian knows OF such things, but not much ABOUT them. But I still think it is lovely! And the flosses are WDW's "Father's Day" and Dinky Dyes' limited edition "Summer Heat." Hmm, now what to use them for.....

I also finished up my portion of Annemarie's Neighborhood. I hope she likes it! In addition to my little gypsy wagon, I added a willow tree, a robin, some butterflies, and a little bunny. I worked really hard to make this mean something, and I think it came out pretty well. Here is a picture of the whole thing, so you can see how my little bit works into the whole:It was kind of an odd space I had to work with, but because I knew what I wanted to stitch would fit there pretty well, I figured I'd take that stress off the stitchers who follow me!

In other news, I had what I think was a good interview last Friday at a community college about 3 hours away. If I'm offered the position (and I accept it), we'll obviously be moving. That's part of why I was working so quickly on Annemarie's piece -- I wanted to get it ready to mail ASAP. Ugh, I hate upheaval. Oh, and I followed my interview by making an appearance at my 10th college reunion (also in the area), where I got disgustingly drunk. What can I say, I was suddenly 20 again....surrounded by all the people who were a bad influence on me then.....Ah well. At least I could crash in a dorm room, and didn't have to drive anywhere!

Annemarie's RR makes an entrance

Proof that I've been working on Annemarie's Neighborhood! This little project has been giving me fits...Annemarie told us all to stitch "whatever we wanted," which sounded great - and terrifying! I was so excited to have a reason to stitch this little gypsy wagon, though, and it has been worth the challenge of trying to fit it (and other elements) in appropriately. It is winding its way along right next to the Canadian capitol....LOL I have a few more bits to add, and then it will be on its way to Cathy B.

Stitching, framing and picspicspics

Yesterday I finally made it out to the LNS to pick up the framed wedding piece. We're not going to this wedding, but DH's parents are (I think!), and they'll be in town for DH's graduation next weekend, so I'll just send it with them. Should ensure that it will arrive safely!
I love the frame I chose. The LNS owner and I tried several different mats, but then this moulding jumped off the wall at me. I don't know the bride and groom terribly well, so I didn't want the piece to become a giant attention-grabber...just in case it isn't their style (and that's how I usually deal with gifts, really...unless I know exactly where the recipient wants to put it and such).

Oh, and that Rosewood Manor pattern I fell in love with - the "Good Night" sampler - it followed me home from the shop. ::blush::

After cleaning the bathroom last night, I sat down to stitch like mad on Katrina's neighborhood square. She asked for a "primitive" house and garden design, and here is my finished square! How'd I do??The flower vine and the girl are from Homespun Elegance patterns, the house is from a sampler book by Brenda Keyes, and the sheep (my favorite part!) is part of a freebie by Brooke's Books. The tulips were a last-minute addition last night....I was getting sooooo tired of all that green! And since I have some lovely little tulips blooming in my front garden right now, I took my inspiration from there. (Besides, doesn't the girl in her blue dress look a bit like my profile picture?? LOL) This won't go in the mail right away, since our next mailing date isn't until the 15th, but it does free up some time for me to work on some other little things!

But now I'm off to do some weeding, before my little tulips get choked out by nasty dandelions....

Losing My Sheep

Just a quick post with a pic of Katrina's neighborhood...I haven't had as much time to work on it as I'd like, but it is coming along nicely, I think! The sheep is my favorite. hehehe He came from a freebie by Brooke's Books -- the shepherdess is based on a Homespun Elegance mini-sampler. She isn't entirely from the pattern, though, since I gave my pattern away....I improvised from a picture I had of the finished sampler. Not that much left to do, just finish the bottom of the house and hill it "sits" on, and add my initials. Katrina, I hope you don't mind that I used a bit of plain white for the little sheepie....there was no white in the oodles of floss you included! The closest I could find to true white blended too well with the fabric for my taste.

Time to go out and play

The weather is just lovely here this weekend....in the 70s and sunny, everything spring should be. There are kids out on bikes all over the neighborhood, and everyone is walking their dogs, weeding their gardens, and even grilling burgers for dinner. Yum.

I walked the dog and picked up more sticks from our giant maple tree yesterday, then I came in and opened all the windows and picked up around the house a bit. Then I sat down to work on Katrina's RR. She requested "primitive" blocks, and suggested designers like Little House Needleworks, Carriage House Samplings, Blackbird Designs...and of course, I don't have anything usable by ANY of those designers. *sigh* But I sat down with one of my favorite Homespun Elegance patterns ("Olde Shaker Tune"), a book of sampler motifs, and the giant bag of floss that Katrina included, and came up with a square that I think is very appropriate and in keeping with her theme. Here is my progress so far:Katrina asked that we stitch all the way to the edge of the block, so that is Judith's showing on the left-hand side. The vine is from the Homespun Elegance pattern, and the house is from my sampler book. It will be sitting on a little hill, and I have a few other plans for the bottom and right side of the block!

Now I'm going back outside!!! Enjoy the rest of your weekend...

Happy Birthday to MEEEEEEEEEEE!

Today marks the beginning of my 33rd year on this planet....I celebrated birthday #32 yesterday. It was a pretty low-key affair, since The Husband had to work late. I actually had a bagel and yogurt for dinner and then went to the gym! hehehe When I came home, there was bag of chocolate-covered pretzels on the counter, along with a box of Junior Mints and a funny card. Ah, he knows me so well. (And don't worry, the pretzels and mints will last a looooong time! But they ARE favorites of mine.) With him working so much and trying to finish up his master's program, I know he doesn't have a lot to spend on silly things like birthdays, so what he did was especially sweet.

Oh, and my mother got me Ginghers!!! They arrived in the mail yesterday, and it was a lovely suprise. Now I have a matching set of embroidery snips and dressmaker's shears. *drool* (Too bad I don't make dresses?!?!?!?)

I haven't really stitched that much this week. I HAVE spent entirely too much time browsing around at the Online Needlework Show, though, and have found several things I want.... Oh, and I've got Katrina's RR square laid out and ready to stitch. I don't have ANY charts by the designers she recommended (not sure why, as I've always thought Little House Needleworks had some cute patterns!), but I combined some floral motifs from a Homespun Elegance pattern with a house I found in a sampler book I have, and I think it came out quite well. And I'm using the threads she supplied, so the colors blend nicely with what has already been stitched. Maybe I'll have a pic this weekend sometime!

I'm almost sad it is done...

...because it is so darned CUTE!!!

This is my addition to Michelle's autumn/Halloween neighborhood. I used a pattern by Gail Bussi that was in an issue of Cross Stitch & Needlework last fall. I added a few extra stars, and the tree. The tree is kind of from Brightneedle's "House on Booberry Lane," but not exactly...I made the branches significantly shorter and stitched it using a blend of hand-dyed and DMC.
Michelle, I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed stitching it for you!!
I'm waiting for the next 2 neighborhoods to arrive from Judith...until they get here, I'm going to work on another exchange project. I signed up for the Fantasy Exchange over on the Rotation Stitchers BB (even though I'm not a member...the organizer posted about it on The Wagon, as well), and I already have a project in mind. I won't be able to share any pictures until the recipient receives it, though!

Craft Sale!

So my mother and I set up our little table at the craft fair this past weekend.  And we didn't do terribly!  I sold $125 worth of needle...
