SBQ, 8/16/2006 - Colors, counts & clutter

Do you have an organizational system for your fabric? If so, what is it? If not, what do you store your fabric in?

How do people store their fabric, especially those small but potentially usable pieces? Do they sort by count? How do they label it or otherwise know what each piece is?

My fabric is stored in the top drawer of my two-drawer file cabinet -- my patterns & magazines are in the bottom drawer. Sadly, there really isn't any "organization" to it....but then, I don't have that much (at least, not when compared to some other folks!). I keep most fabbies in whatever packaging they come in, so usually the count and color is on there somewhere. In the front of the drawer are my hand-dyeds, in the back right corner is a stack of Jazlyn that I bought from Silkweaver on eBay, and in the back left corner is a stack of "everything else." Oh, and when I use a part of a piece, I measure the remainder and change the label on the package to reflect that.
The little bit of aida that I have floating around isn't worthy of the drawer. hehehe It is in a box in the closet.

Last night I worked on my little Shepherd's Bush Santa. I'm doing this on a scrap of 28-ct. Silkweaver Moondust opalescent lugana - it isn't quite as pink as the pic looks on my monitor, and it is so wonderfully sparkly!
My fabric is too small for framing....and I'm afraid that once I finish the border, the design will be too big for an ornie. So I have a back-up plan!! I have another similarly-sized piece of Moondust, so I'll stitch the "Good Yule" square of the same size and style and then use some pretty red fabric I have to make a "quilted" bell pull/wallhanging.

Ooo, how about making the SB piece into a pillow, you could put a fabric around it.... maybe a flanged pillow? Sigh - if only I had the talent to do such things! I love the colors!

Craft Sale!

So my mother and I set up our little table at the craft fair this past weekend.  And we didn't do terribly!  I sold $125 worth of needle...
